His wave symbol consists of two tattoos on his cheeks. If you’re looking to watch this, bear in mind that it’s more suited to veteran viewers.Kite's avatar is a young, blue-haired boy dressed mostly in red clothing, with a red hat. Its extreme scenes are made for shock value, which it certainly achieves. Whilst the general concept and the character of Sawa were outstanding, the OVA as a whole is a little on the dull side. Nothing much to say there other than that they were pretty samey and boring. I found them to be rather dull, typical villains with a built in ‘Haha I am so evil and I know it’ personality. Others, such as her ‘owner’ and her victims, are not really explored. Other than that, he as a person is never explored. He represents the safety she remembers from her early childhood. He seems to be more of a symbol rather than a person- he represents to Sawa the idea of escape, of an easy life away from killing. Oburi does not have the same development as Sawa, despite being arguably as important. The problem lies with the other characters. Her personality is so changeable that it seems absent. She endures rape and belittlement, the pain of murder, only to achieve her own (perfectly legit) goal. Is she a cruel assassin? Is she a sad, desperate young girl? Is she smitten with Oburi himself, or merely the idea that she could escape? It is clear that Sawa may appear to obey, but deep inside she obeys only her instincts. She shows very little emotion, and discovering her background only led me to suspect that all her smiles and chatter was fake. Sawa’s character is fantastically developed. I’ll say nothing more!Įven here, I may be being a bit generous. I had to take a moment to bring myself back from the shock.

Even though part of me roughly anticipated the direction it would take, the final minute hit me very hard.

The only reason Kite gets an above-average score is the ending. It is action-driven the emotion and internal thoughts are heavily implied rather than given a real focus. It took a minute for me to piece together who was who in each scene. Not all of the scenes tie together in the tidiest of ways, and the sudden, unexpected switches can be disconcerting. It is a harsh and real representation of the damage that can be done when you condition children to kill from an early age. Instead, Kite presents it in a fashion that can only be described as brutal. You would expect such a plot to be portrayed in a touching, emotional manner. She meets Oburi, a young man in a similar situation, and the two decide to abscond together. The simplest explanation of the story is that Sawa is an assassin, under the control of a man who rapes and manipulates her. Somehow, they pull it off, but Kite is not without its faults. Given that it is only a short movie, the creators had little time to squeeze in an ambitious amount of story elements. It certainly made me wince a few times, and that’s no bad thing- it demonstrates good technique that can really eat through the centre of the viewer. The colours become distorted, the general look of the scene becomes more disturbing. The hentai scenes are executed in a way that makes them disturbing, which is what they are meant to be- these scenes do involve rape and the animation did become rather different, more aggressive in these parts. The gritty, dark plot leads the way for a very muted colour scheme, which perfectly fits the genres and the realism of the show. I just can’t give it a high rating because there was nothing too impressive about it. To be honest, it’s not bad per se, it’s just dated. And I’m cool with that. Of course, lovers of very old anime (such as myself) would not mind the poor quality animation in the least. Would suit: Lovers of gory horror anime, anyone interested in the more ‘extreme’ side of things, people with a strong stomach (very very strong) and a calm disposition!

They begin to dream of a life that is free from being stalked by death at every turn.įormat: Anime movie/OVA, 51 mins (approx)Īge range: R (adults watch at own discretion) When she is made to collaborate with Oburi, another child assassin, the two form a bond of sorts. Rapists, paedophiles and killers are all on the cop’s list of people for Sawa to dispose of. An orphan under the control of a corrupt cop, she commits murders on the ‘scum’ of society. This story surrounds Sawa: a college-aged, dolly-eyed assassin. Aside from being attracted to the extreme nature of the film, I’m just a sucker for stories about assassins. Ones that contain sex, violence, gore, in all its extreme forms. So I was looking at potential anime to watch after finishing Sound! Euphonium, and came across a YouTube video about controversial anime.
